What are the High Commission of Canada Scholarships?

The High Commission of Canada Scholarships are merit-based scholarships that are awarded to international students who demonstrate exceptional academic achievement. These scholarships are available to students who are enrolled in a Canadian university or college, and who are planning to study at a Canadian institution for one academic year.

The High Commission of Canada Scholarships are awarded on a competitive basis, and selection is based on the applicant’s academic record, personal statement, letters of recommendation, and extracurricular activities. These scholarships are not need-based, and funding is not provided for living expenses.

The High Commission of Canada Scholarships are an excellent way to finance your education in Canada. If you are an international student who is planning to study at a Canadian university or college, we encourage you to apply for these scholarships.

Eligible applicants must:

  • Be a citizen of a Commonwealth country other than Canada
  • Be between the ages of 18 and 35
  • Have achieved a minimum grade point average (GPA) of 3.5 on a 4.0 scale in their most recent academic program
  • Demonstrate financial need
  • Not be in receipt of another major scholarship or fellowship award in canada

1. Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarship 2025

The Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarship (Vanier CGS) program is designed to attract and retain world-class doctoral students and to establish Canada as a global centre of excellence in research and higher learning. The scholarships are worth $50,000 per year for three years and are tenable at participating Canadian universities.

Eligible candidates must:

  • be nominated by their institution;
  • be pursuing their first doctoral degree (or combined MA/PhD or MD/PhD);
  • have achieved a first-class average, as determined by their institution, in each of the last two completed years of study; and
  • demonstrate both leadership skills and a high standard of scholarly achievement in their field.

2. Lester B. Pearson International Scholarship 2025

The Lester B. Pearson International Scholarship Program is now accepting applications for the 2025 academic year. The program is designed to recognize international students who demonstrate exceptional academic achievement and leadership potential.

Up to 100 scholarships are awarded each year, and recipients receive funding for up to four years of undergraduate study at a Canadian university. The scholarship covers tuition, books, travel expenses, and living costs.

To be eligible for the Lester B. Pearson International Scholarship, applicants must:

  • Be international students who are not Canadian citizens or permanent residents
  • Demonstrate outstanding academic achievement (minimum 80% average)
  • Be nominated by their school or university
  • Be aged 17-20 on September 1 of the year in which they begin their studies
  • Have demonstrated leadership experience and involvement in extracurricular activities
  • Intend to pursue a full-time undergraduate degree at a Canadian university

3. McGill University Scholarships 2025

The High Commission of Canada is pleased to offer scholarships for international students who are interested in studying at McGill University. These scholarships will cover the cost of tuition and other associated expenses for one academic year.

To be eligible for these McGill scholarships, applicants must:

  • Be a citizen of a country other than Canada
  • Be enrolled in or have been accepted into a full-time undergraduate or graduate program at McGill University
  • Demonstrate financial need
  • Have a strong academic record

4. Alberta University Scholarships 2025

The Alberta University Scholarships are awarded to international students who are enrolled in an eligible program at a recognized Alberta university. The scholarships are worth $5,000 CAD per year and are renewable for up to four years of study. There is no requiremenst for IELTS results.

To be eligible for the Alberta University Scholarships, applicants must:

  • Be enrolled in an eligible program at a recognized Alberta university
  • Be a citizen of a country other than Canada
  • Have achieved a minimum grade point average (GPA) of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale or equivalent during their last 60 units of study prior to beginning their program in Alberta
  • Demonstrate financial need
