General Information
The Swiss Government Excellence Scholarship (SSEF) covers expenses for 2 years of study in Switzerland, including tuition fees and Swiss monthly subsistence. It is available to students coming from developing countries who have obtained their bachelor’s degree (or equivalent) after 2024 and are enrolling at a higher education institution in one of Switzerland’s official languages (German, French, or Italian).
Applicants must be under 35 years old when they start their studies. This scholarship program began in 2024 and it applies to students starting their bachelor studies during 2024. The first academic year covered by the scholarship will be 2024/2025.
Requirements
You must meet all of these requirements to be eligible: you must hold citizenship of an English-speaking country and possess a good understanding of German, French, or Italian. You must have excellent academic achievements (at least 1.8 GPA) and demonstrate outstanding professional and social competencies by providing a CV, certificates, references, and any other supporting documents with your application.
You must not have already completed more than one degree from undergraduate study, taught postgraduate courses, or received funding from another scholarship program. Swiss government scholarships are awarded on a competitive basis; you will need to provide compelling evidence that supports your application. Your application will be judged based on objective criteria including academic results and language skills, as well as subjective factors such as motivation and personality fit with Switzerland’s culture.
How to apply
The Swiss Government Excellence Scholarship was established by Switzerland’s Federal Council in 1991. Its goal is to promote academic excellence and foster cultural exchange by giving exceptional students from around the world an opportunity to study at one of over 100 Swiss institutions of higher education. In recent years, more than 8,500 scholars have received Swiss Government Scholarships.

Financial aid
If you’re looking to study abroad, taking out a loan may not be an option. While financial aid can cover tuition and expenses while you’re studying, it won’t help with costs of living or flights and visa fees. So even if your loan should cover most of your education, you may need to work while studying abroad—especially if your parents aren’t willing to pay for it (which is fair!).
